Three things we learned this quarter

Every quarter we sit down as a team and talk through what we learned. Here are three takeaways from this one.

1. Shipping smaller is shipping faster

We used to batch features into big releases. This quarter we tried shipping individual changes as soon as they were ready, and we shipped roughly twice as much as the previous quarter.

2. Documentation pays for itself in weeks

We put real effort into documenting our internal tools. Within a month, the time new hires needed to become productive dropped noticeably.

We’re excited to launch our completely redesigned website. This post walks through what’s new, why we made the choices we did, and what’s coming next.

Why we redesigned

Our old site had served us well for years, but it was becoming hard to maintain and didn’t perform well on mobile. We wanted something:

Fast — pages should load in under a second

Accessible — usable by everyone, including assistive technology users

Easy to update — content changes shouldn’t require a developer

Credible-looking — design that signals professionalism

What we built it with

The site runs on Hugo, a static site generator, with components from the U.S. Web Design System. Every page is pre-rendered HTML served from a global CDN, so there’s no database to query and nothing to wait for.
